just "graduated" from my two-week, overly-pathetic NSTP course. and so now, once again, i'm an official bum. these days make me regret that i should have taken worthwhile subjects to catch up with the psychology curriculum. that is, if i'm accepted. i'm an incoming sophomore. i'm already 18 but still, i haven't done much things to call my "finished agenda" or simply, "my long-term agenda."
anyway, atleast, for the moment, i won't have to wake up at 4:00am in the morning, freeze in the bathroom, inhale carbon monoxide, walk miles, get irritated by the the traffic jam, etc. etc. i could live my life at home or wherever my mind and my feet takes me. i'm a free (wo)man this summer. haha. cheers! :D
sure though, i'm gonna miss the people from the marikina DSWD office (although some are quite harrassing.. eww). gone are the days where i have to interview different people asking for different financial assistance services. never (hope not) will i encounter again people who almost cried their eyes out in front of me because they are these, they are that, they are sick of these, they are in need of that. never (hope not again) will i encounter teenagers in the office that constantly denies their wrong deed. and yes! never will i encounter people who would ask my mobile number and would ask to be my textmate. yes! :p
never will i ever have to make social case study reports. never will i stress myself out with a typewriter that could not align itself and does not befriend my fingers. never will i write term-paper long cases because i can't use the typewriter well enough. but, sadly, i would never be in contact with the "real" world. a world that vanishes upon my return home. a world full of chaos and poverty. a world, that sadly, many Filipinos live in.
i'm gonna miss the people from the chikiting patrol creative center. it was in this place that i have come face-to-face with criminals -- no bars, no jailguards. you would think we've placed ourselves in the middle of a savanna desert, waiting to be eaten by vicious carnivores. simply, playing the role of the prey. ya right, we were in the middle of the desert but with the assurance that the predators around are tame.
honestly, i don't like the sound of "criminals" so may i use "minor offenders" as a substitute. instead of placing these minor offenders, they are placed in a home, in this case, ms. nadeia sarte's home (former chikiting patrol producer). here they are treated as a family member. by their looks, you wouldn't even think that they have filed cases such as rape and illegal possesion of firearms and ammunition.
my classmate said that she used to believe that rehabilitative programs are effective. people who will undergo such programs would always return to their doings upon their release. it is only media sensationalism that makes it all so true to believe. but once we stepped our foot the HOME WITHOUT BARS (that is how marikina calls this home where they take the custody of minor offenders into ms. sarte's home) and when we got the chance to gain their trust, i realized (she too realized) that her previous statement was invalid. gee, these minor offenders are way better than me when it comes to house chores and the arts!
it must be cliché to hear that people commit crimes because they don't have something to eat. or that they were just instructed to do so. or that they were just wrongly accused. sometimes, we have to believe them because most of the time it is true. we oversee their reasons just because it is not OUR reason. we see it, on all sides, as an act of disgrace. we oversee poverty as their main reason because we don't get to experience living in patched up houses. we don't get to eat nothing in one whole day. we get good education the way they don't. we could always look at the same thing but see it differently.
these criminals/minor offenders are the people who need love more than ever. they have to have somebody they could trust. they have to have somebody to get strength from. they have to have somebody to let them see that their's a big world out there waiting for them. they have to have somedody to remind them incessantly that life, though complex, is still meaningful to pursue.
