failure isn't falling down but staying down.-UP Pep Squad
they may have failed to execute the perfect lift for a routine.
they may have bruised themselves a lot of times already.
they may have been confined in the hospital for fractures.
they may have had sleepless nights due to heavy practice.
they may have never been the UAAP champion for five years.
still, they are there: constantly striving and fighting for UP: the univeristy of the people.
as a requirement, i watched the Pep Squad's annual dance concert, Elevate, now on its seventh year. i was with sophia and bea in a very strategic location in the UP theater. so strategic that we had a very good view during the show and so strategic enough to let us feel that we were the cause of a barkada's separation. isang malaking harang kumbaga. well, it's not our fault, they should have told us earlier.
as usual, the program started with the national anthem and a song prayer from a very brilliant singer. he's so brilliant that i don't know his name. haha. he's so brilliant that after he sang josh groban's 'the prayer', the audience clapped for his promising performance. being too impressed, they forgot that it was a prayer song and not an intermission number.
the show's not a bore, especially when every cheerleading contestant strutted their stuff with over the top energy and projection. most importantly, each performed like there was no tomorrow. everybody was enjoying the moment and the spotlight.
five teams competed for the most coveted championship title and the php15, 000 cash prize. the group from UP los baños (called 'the ravens') came in third place. they had a good performance but almost all of their lifts were a mess. really. if you could just hear the gasp of the crowd when a member falls. as a student seated behind me commented, "pinagbigyan. ang layo ba naman kasi ng pinanggalingan." true.
came in second was the PE class' team. only 25 members in a team were allowed to join so the rest of the class became boosters. they were so adorable to look at because of their round and sparkling pompoms. they added intensity to their cheerleaders. and mind you, the PE class was so great! i envied jane, my classmate, who was a participant. she was a flyer but then i didn't recognize her there. how i wish i had cheerdance for a PE course. :'(

engineering's CIEM (an organization) was hailed the champion. as usual, the whole college of engineering filled the theater with cheerful noise. ciem's performance was very promising. they were really like cheerleaders. held me in great awe. heart stopping.
after the cheerleading competition was the concert proper of the pep squad. i couldn't utter any discrimination. they were perfectly fantastic performers! if you thought that they could only do some lifts, flash pearly whites and shake pompoms, well you are wrong. their concert showcased that they are very well rounded. they did folk, ballet, ballroom, jazz and street dances.whoa.
their theme goes something like this, "how do you count a year?" and so they had 12 dance numbers for every month. my favorites were the ballet number for march and the jazz for april (which gave me the creeps).
hai.. i want to be a pep squad member.
eto na naman po tayo.
hahaha.

we had dong abay, a music artist, as a guest speaker for our panpil17 class. i concluded that he was our prof's favorite student before.
with mr. dong abay. :P
actually, for our generation, he would not ring a bell. but he certainly had his mark in the industry. he told us that his friends from famous bands (like the eraserheads and sandwich) calls him "sir" since he was thought of as a legend, what with his "banal na aso" being revived by gerard salonga in his classical album.
sad, but my friends don't even have an idea of him. what's worse is that his compositions are just given the cold shoulder. he sang a few of his works and i could say that they are full of sense. they were products of critical thinking, products of a UP student's mind.
as he have quoted (not exactly the same words):
"malinaw sa akin ang ginagawa ko. gusto kong gumawa ng kanta at ipamahagi ito. handa naman akong mag-perform kahit saan, yun nga lang, walang gustong makinig. magaling naman akong magperform, ibinibibigay ko ang makakaya ko. siguro, ganun lang talaga. hindi angkop sa taste ng tao ang mga gawa ko."
how awful, we'll be losing one of our artists this march (as what our prof have said).
